This Sunday: “The Riches of His Glory”

Dear CrossPointe,

This Sunday we delve into Romans 9:19–23 and what might be the most challenging text in all of the Bible. In this passage, Paul continues to respond to anticipated objections about what he has said regarding God’s purpose of election earlier in the chapter. As before, instead of hedging the truth or attempting to soften what might be perceived as hard edges, Paul doubles down on the freeness of God to do as he pleases. The analogy he uses is that of a potter and his clay. How the clay is used and for what purpose is determined by the potter, not the clay.

Now, to be sure, this is a deep and challenging passage that must be handled with care. We need to remember that his thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9), his judgements unsearchable, and his ways inscrutable (Romans 11:33). And yet, all of the truth about God that the Word reveals to us is for our good (2 Timothy 3:16). So, let’s roll up our sleeves, humble ourselves, and consider the goodness and riches of his glory together this Sunday.

Grace and peace,

Brad
